1. Update: A general state of the search

So today I received my first response from a potential employer. “Rico”  owns a small, but successful and progressive agency in Ottawa,  and was definitely one of my top choices for a place to ply my trade. The good news is that he enjoyed my website, but the bad news is that he won’t be looking to add staff until September. He said he’d keep me in mind for freelance in the future, so I hope we do get a chance to work together.

I applied for a job in an undisclosed section of the province today, but I doubt I fit their qualification standards, and I’m not sure how serious I am about the idea anyway. Looking throgh their online portfolio, I found work that looked EXACTLY like the client I ran away from 50C because of. I’d really like to find a situation that isn’t a carbon copy of the one that I left, but money is money. I’m sitting on a small, but not insignificant, amount of debt, and I could sure use a stable income stream. This freelance lifestyle is overrated.

Speaking of freelance, I’m currently working on the 2008/09 annual report for ICAN - Independence Centre and Network. ICAN is a local NGO that provides assistive living and rehabilitation services to the disabled. Johanna Westby is doing illustrations for the covers and a few interior spreads, under my direction, and I’m very excited to see what she produces. It’s not going to be a lavish document, the money just isn’t there, but it will hopefully be a marked improvement on the reports ICAN has handed out in the past. I’ll post photos after they get released.

Other than that, I’ve been working on a physical promotional device to send out. I’m trying to find the right balance between awesome production and cost effectiveness. As is probably apparent by now, I’m not exactly liquid, so I’m looking for the best way to reach at least 30-40 employers in an eye-grabbing way for under $500. I have the general concept worked out, just just need to finalize the form. In the meantime, I’m just sending out email “cover letters” with a link to my website. With a bit of luck someone will offer me an interview before I drop any coin. ;-)

Finally, this blog has focused on my design work and my job search up to this point, but I’m planning on diversifying it a bit more. Those who know me know that I’m pretty political, so expect this blog to become a place for my thoughts on Canada and the world. My next post will be a look into five structural and procedural changes that the Canadian Federal Government can make to bring honesty and integrity back into our political system. And soon I’ll be working on an abbreviated platform that I would run on if I held the reigns of one of the major parties.
